Throw Back Thursday: The Peplum

I think that peplum skirts are adorable! When the trend reappeared around 2012 I was a little skeptical of them being flattering but if you find the right fit I think they can be flattering on almost anyone. The right fit is the key. Peplums can accentuate the waist, just make sure that the length of the peplum is appropriate for your body. You don't want it to be too long or too short so that it is cutting you off at an awkward spot.

According to the Wall Street Journal peplums first became fashionable as part of Christian Dior's "New Look." The "New Look" was all about creating an hourglass silhouette. In Dior's designs the jacket had a short overskirt that created the peplum effect that we commonly see today.

Peplums regained popularity in the 1980s. They returned on dresses, blouses, and jackets. They were paired with the shoulder pads and bright colors and patterns. Popular designers included Yves Saint Laurent and Thierry Mugler.

Over the last few years peplums have regained popularity. Peplums are once again a definite trend for this spring.
